CERTIFICATION OF PRODUCT – Low Voltage Directive – CE Marking

For Electrical Products operating from 50 V AC to 1000 V AC or 75 V DC and 1500 V DC covered under Low Voltage Directive (LVD – 2014/35/EU) The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) (2014/35/EU) ensures that electrical equipment within certain voltage limits provides a high level of protection for European citizens, and benefits fully from the Single Market. It has been applicable since 20 April 2016.

About the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)

The LVD covers health and safety risks on electrical equipment operating with an input or output voltage of between:

  • 50 and 1000 V for Alternating Current
  • 75 and 1500 V for Direct Current

It applies to a wide range of electrical equipment for both consumer and professional usage, such as:

  • household appliances
  • cables
  • power supply units
  • laser equipment
  • certain components, e.g. fuses

Other directives affecting electrical products

The vast majority of products within the scope of the LVD will also be within the scope of the

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive directive
  • RoHS directive
  • WEEE directive.
  • The Ecodesign Directive may also apply.

Some electrical products will not be covered by the LVD because they will be covered by other, more specific directives which are mutually exclusive with the LVD. These include the

  • ATEX Directive for equipment used in explosive atmospheres,
  • RED Directive for radio and telecommunications equipment,
  • Medical Devices Directive for radiology and medical purposes
  • Machinery Directive for various machines in industrial use

Notified Bodies

The new LVD Directive (Recital No. 9 ) does not require notified bodies to assess if products to be placed on the market comply with the applicable EU legislation. The manufacturer alone is responsible for determining this by carrying out conformity assessment procedures. QVC as Certification Body can issue the Certificate of Conformity.

What QVC can do?

We at QVC in cooperation with it’s alliance partners in Europe provide Services in connection with Conformity Assessment of electrical equipment.

Services provided by QVC in connection with conformity assessment of electrical equipment to assist manufacturers and their agents to gain access to the EU market including:

  • Product Safety Testing in the Accredited Testing Laboratory
  • Conformity assessment according to the Council Directive 2014/35/EU, laying down the technical requirements for low voltage electrical equipment
  • Review of Technical construction File (TCF) / Declaration of Conformity (DoC) as per the requirements of LVD 2014/35/EU
  • Review of Test Reports as per the requirements of applicable harmonized EN Standards
  • Technical Inspections including witness of testing at manufacturer’s facility
  • Issue Certificate of Conformity

Why QVC?

QVC as a Certification Body involved in Certification & assessment is

  • Impartial
  • Having trained personnel having knowledge of requirements of assessments
  • Having adequate facilities or access to facilities like testing, documentation of regulation/standards needed to perform technical & administrative tasks
